Coaching FAQ’s

What is coaching?

While coaching does resemble therapy in some ways, therapy is about addressing mental health concerns, while coaching is about "exploring ways to fuel personal growth, and maximize both professional and personal potential" (ICF).

What coaching is NOT:

✔️An opportunity to pick the coach’s brain

✔️Career advice/mentoring

✔️Writing advice/consultation

✔️Help with developing your productivity routine

What can I get out of hiring a coach?

Coaching can help you:

✔️Identify mindset blocks and negative patterns of thinking that are keeping you stuck

✔️Recognize your own ability to solve problems and improve your life

✔️Change your self-perception and improve your mindset

How do I know if I need coaching?

The best coaching candidates are those who have identified that they have a problem (i.e. procrastination, negative self-talk, writer's block, a lack of clarity or direction) and are ready to do the work to address that problem.

How can I prepare for a session?

Bring a topic or issue you want to address to your session, and be prepared to get out of your comfort zone.

“Working as a writer in a TV comedy room is such a unique experience, it can be really hard to find support from anyone who understands how it works. Charla's experience in comedy rooms makes her especially helpful. When I signed up, I thought Charla would maybe give me tips on how to pitch better jokes, or how to connect with my co-workers. But she helped address root issues that went far deeper than the surface level workplace dynamics. Charla helped me start to make peace with past traumas, and it resulted in improved performance at work.”

“Charla’s approach is thoughtful, intentional, and grounding. Our coaching session helped me to put words to the negative feelings I was having about my career transition which allowed me to look at my challenge areas (AND my areas of success) with renewed, clear focus.”

— Nicole

“I originally started working with Charla because I was approaching a transition point in my career, and I was struggling to figure out which direction to take. Even though my career as a scientist was outside of Charla’s field, she asked insightful questions and was able to guide me into figuring out what I wanted. I was able to make my choice with confidence and no regrets! Working with Charla was the perfect mix of friendly warmth and the business of getting things accomplished. Throughout this experience there was a lot of emotion that came to the surface for me that I hadn’t expected, but I was able to feel comfortable sharing with Charla. Her leading me through the RAIN technique has been immensely helpful in figuring out the roots of my situational responses, and something I’m going to continue using in my life. I really appreciated how Charla taught me techniques that will help me manage myself better so that I can relax and enjoy my life more. My original reason for seeking out a life coach was successfully accomplished, and I’d happily work with Charla again if I’m in need of more coaching in the future.”

“ I felt I had advanced as far as I could on my own, and I didn’t know what else to do to continue moving forward in my career. I was exhausted and had lost the joy in my craft. Charla helped me re-identify why I love comedy and writing as well as lay out what I needed to do to take the next steps on my career path. We also were able to identify habits and schedules that work best for me, and that has helped me continue to be productive in a sustainable way even after our sessions ended.”
